The President of the Republic met with the Minister of Defence Mr Jüri Luik31.10.2001
Today, President Arnold Rüütel had a working meeting with the Minister of Defence Mr Jüri Luik, with whom topical national defence issues were talked about.
The President discussed with the Minister of Defence the possibilities for increasing the speed of development of the Defence League, making it more professional and disciplined and keeping the step with the Estonian Defence Forces. Both acknowledged that quite a lot has been done already, increasingly more active young people join the Deence League today, and the training and exercise opportunities as well as co-operation with the regular units of the Estonian Defence Forces have improved.
The President also expressed his interest in the development of the mobilisation system and made proposals for raising its efficiency. The national defence of Estonia can only be built on the entire nation and on the smooth co-operation between all state structures.
During the meeting, the Minister of Defence also gave the President of the Republic an overview of the current situation of the enlargement of NATO and the prospects of Estonia, also of the military co-operation of the Baltic states and the joint projects of the three countries.
