President of the Republic sent a greeting to participants in the Dostoevsky days
30.10.2001

President of the Republic Arnold Rüütel sent a greeting to the participants in the Dostoevsky days that are dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the great Russian literary classic Fyodor Dostoevsky. President stressed in his address to the international event that the link between the culture and the word is the core issue of culture and that culture in its essence is interpretation and dialogue. The link between Fyodor Dostoevsky and Estonia is not only limited to the fact that he was in Tallinn himself but one must remember that his works have had a substantial impact on Estonian literature.

President Arnold Rüütel referred to the example of the Estonian literarary classic Anton Hansen Tammsaare who translated Dostoevsky and as a great admirere of his talent was himself influenced by the leitmotiv in Dostoevsky’s works – passage through suffering to the life truth. The ceremony of the international Dostoevsky literary award is held in Tallinn, hence it is a direct referral to intercultural dialogue and to the fact that the key issues of human culture know no bounds.

In conclusion President Arnold Rüütel wished the participants of the Dostoevsky days good luck in life and creative work.
