The President of the Republic met the Economic Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu
23.10.2001

President Arnold Rüütel had a meeting with the members of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu in Kadriorg today; the meeting focused on the economic forecasts for the year 2002. The impact of world economy on Estonia’s economy was discussed, as well as the state budget for 2002 and the side effects of the increase of electricity price on Estonia’s economic life.

The President emphasised that it is important to analyse the impact of the increase of electricity price on the state budget even before the state budget of the year 2002 would be approved. The Head of State drew attention to the fact that the increase of electricity price would also escalate social tensions and cause socio-psychological stress, which means that also the social benefits of the state must be reviewed.

Also unemployment and youth problems were discussed. As the President said, it is important to create further possibilities for young people to spend their free time, and to seek funding for that. It was also agreed to continue the working meetings of the Head of State and the Economic Committee of the Riigikogu.
