The President of the Republic received the representatives of the Roundtable of Young Politicians
18.10.2001

President Arnold Rüütel today had a meeting with the Roundtable of Young Politicians, which unites young Russian politicians in Estonia. Rodion Denissov, Eduard Odinets, Max Kaur, Aleksander Apolinsky, Yuri Zitin, Ernst Udras and Oleg Konoplyev participated on the meeting that took place on the initiative of the Roundtable.

On the meeting, the Roundtable members said that conflicts between youth groups that have received close attention recently are in fact not conflicts on ethnic basis, but have more social reasons. Young people have difficulties with spending their free time, there are not many possibilities for this, and many of the existing ones are too expensive.

The President of the Republic emphasised that already in the budget of the year 2002, the state must give more consideration to the need to allocate more funds for young people’s hobby centres and other free-time activities. President Rüütel said that despite the financially complicated situation, it is necessary to give more attention to the ways young people spend their time after school, all over Estonia. Financing sports and other hobbies today actually means prevention of crime in the future.

President Rüütel promised young politicians to consider the idea of establishing a Roundtable of Youth to the institution of the President of the Republic, and announced his wish to discuss the subject of providing state funds for young people’s free-time activities also on his meeting with the Minister of Finance Siim Kallas today.
