The President of the Republic had a meeting with the Fiscal Committee of the Riigikogu

President Arnold Rüütel had a meeting with the members of the Fiscal Committee of the Riigikogu in Kadriorg today, mostly to discuss the drawing up of Estonian state budget for the year 2002.

Kalle Jürgenson, the Chairman of the Committee, recognised the work of the Government of the Republic and the Ministry of Finance so far, as they have been careful in drawing up the draft act; at the same time, the Chairman hopes that the Riigikogu would be able to pass the State Budget for the Year 2002 Act before its Christmas vacation.

The President was interested in the extent of the income basis of local governments from next year’s state budget, and the members of the Committee assured that various measures were being sought to increase it. As Kalle Jürgenson said, representatives of the organisations of local governments are welcome to visit the budget debates.

As President Rüütel said, it is necessary to achieve that more attention would be paid in Estonia to investments involving extensive research work, and that more Estonian scientists should be engaged in this process.

President Rüütel reiterated his hope to co-operate with the Riigikogu, its committees and other institutions in order to find answers to the questions Estonia is facing. Besides other matters, the Fiscal Committee of the Riigikogu could give more consideration to increasing the benefit sums for children and mothers. As the President said, the birth rate in Estonia is in crisis and it is necessary to draft a national strategy in this matter.
