The President of the Republic met the Legal Chancellor
12.10.2001

The President of the Republic had a meeting with the Legal Chancellor Allar Jõks today. The Legal Chancellor spoke to the Head of State about the main priorities of his work and the main problems he had encountered in his work. The President and the Legal Chancellor stated that the Legal Chancellor’s control over the official institutions in guaranteeing the protection of constitutional rights and freedoms is another activity besides the supervision of constitutionality that should acquire a more weighty role in Estonia today.

The President supported the Legal Chancellor’s wish to give more attention to the protection of the rights of children in his work, especially emphasising the need for the fast solution of the problem of the so-called street children. Common positions were also reached in the question that Estonia needs a national housing programme, increase of employment, and better organised social welfare programmes. Thoughts were exchanged also on the administrative reform and Estonia’s accession to the European Union.

The President of the Republic and the Legal Chancellor confirmed their readiness to protect the Estonian Constitution in the future.
