The President of the Republic met with county governors
04.10.2006

On Wednesday, the President of the Republic met with county governors at Kadriorg and thanked them for their cooperation so far.

It was concluded at the meeting that the current organisation of local government needed some serious review in order to more precisely follow European principle of subsidiarity and cope with worryingly deepening centralization. It was also found that in the field of public services the state often uses economizing policy at the expense of local people. President Rüütel emphasised that in that respect it was important to learn from the positive experience of Finland.

Governor of Rapla county Tõnis Blank, on behalf of the governors, thanked the outgoing Head of State for pleasant cooperation and said that President Rüütel had been strong and enduring like a juniper tree, and handed over to him three beautiful juniper plants as a present of county governors.

On Wednesday, the Head of State also received Jaan Ots, Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Male Choirs Association. The President of the Republic is the patron of the Estonian Male Choirs Association. At the meeting President Rüütel pointed out that it was as remarkable that the total number of male and boys’ choirs in Estonia was 95 while in Finland or in Sweden the same number was about dozen times less. “Male and boys’ choirs can offer a form of organisation that facilitates bringing up good men who value family values and rule of law and love their homeland. The Estonian Male Choirs Association has every reason to be proud of its achievements over the last 18 years,” President Rüütel said.

Wednesday evening, the President of the Republic also met with the Board of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, headed by the Chairman of the Board Toomas Luman.
