The President of the Republic met with a high-level United States diplomat
03.10.2006

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received a high-level diplomat of the US State Department, Deputy Assistant Secretary Mark A. Pekala.

Both parties of the meeting agreed that Estonia and USA are joined by good relations and close cooperation both on bilateral level and within the framework of NATO. The President of the Republic stressed that the two countries are also joined by their commitment to promoting democracy in the world, and in that context singled out the countries covered by the EU Neighbourhood Policy. Mark A. Pekala said that Estonia was a close partner and ally for the United States.

Mark A. Pekala extended the US State Department's sincere words of thanks to the head of Estonian state for his work done in leading the Estonian state. ''The United States of America deeply admire Estonia's achievements during Arnold Rüütel's presidency. The Estonian state has proved that it is possible to transfer from the Soviet-style era to a family of democratic states. Estonia is an exceptional example for many countries. You have an experience to be shared, and we can facilitate its realisation,'' Pekala said.

Mark A. Pekala works as Deputy Assistant Secretary to Deputy Secretary Daniel Fried in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the State Department, where he oversees bilateral relations with Nordic, Baltic, and northern Central European countries. Pekala has previously been Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Estonia; his academic research work has focused on the Soviet Union foreign and defence policy.
