The President of the Republic begun his working visit to Hiiumaa

President Rüütel and Mrs. Rüütel today begun a working visit to Hiiumaa where they acquaint themselves with local health care facilities, enterprises and development projects, and open the Baltic 7 Youth Sports Games.

Today, in the morning, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Rüütel acquainted themselves with Sõru Harbour where Kalev Kotkas, municipal mayor of Emmaste, introduced Sõru Maritime Centre and the reconstruction of the motor yacht Alari. Thereafter President and Mrs. Rüütel travelled to Kärdla where Mayor of Kärdla Ene Kaups and Chairman of City Council Ivo Eesmaa gave an overview of the construction of Hiiumaa Information and Counselling Centre.

In Kärdla, the head of state visited also Hiiumaa Hospital and Kärdla Health Centre. The President of the Republic pointed out the importance of such health centre in Hiiumaa and thanked Salme Elgas, a legendary health worker of the centre, and counsellor Ere Vaidla for their good work. President Rüütel commended also the work of Hiiumaa Hospital, and concluded that life in Hiiumaa has advanced very well lately.

After that, President and Mrs. Rüütel visited Hiiumaa Museum where they acquainted themselves with exhibitions “Farewell to the era of tubs” and “Ernst Jaakson – 100”, and participated in a discussion circle on knowledge capital of Hiiumaa.

Tonight, the head of state and Mrs. Rüütel will take part in the ceremony of signing a sports agreement at Linnumäe recreation centre, and the President of the Republic will open the Baltic 7 Youth Sports Games in Kärdla.

Tomorrow, President and Mrs. Rüütel within the framework of the Hiiumaa visit will go to Suuremõisa Technical School and Basic School, will acquaint themselves with Vaemla Wool Factory, Käina church and community centre, Orjaku Harbour, Dagen Haus holiday home and Kuriste church.
