29.06.2006

President Arnold Rüütel received the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia Ashot GaloyanPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia Ashot Galoyan who presented his Letter of Credentials.

In the words of the President of the Republic, cultural ties between Estonia and Armenia have a long history. ''In addition to that we share similar principles and goals, which creates a good basis for us to think how we together can contribute to the shaping of a better and more secure future. Estonia highly regards Armenia's aspirations towards European integration. We ourselves have recently passed that road and we are ready to share our experience with you,'' the head of state said.

President Rüütel also noted that Estonia highly appreciates the EU's active South Caucasus policy that gives the neighbourhood policy more concrete framework and fosters economic development in the whole region. ''Armenia's geographic location offers a good opportunity to be active in transit and trade exchange. We are interested in deepening of economic contacts between the two countries that have so far been modest, but we can certainly develop our relations further,'' the President of the Republic added.

In the words of Ambassador Galoyan, Armenia considers itself a part of Europe. ''People in Armenia believe in Europe that has open doors and borders, where human rights and peoples' freedom of choice are respected. I firmly believe that Estonia will be our strong partner in that. I would like very much to take Armenian-Estonian relations to a new level in new geopolitical conditions, and to strengthen our bilateral cooperation. Armenia is optimistic about the future of relations between our two countries and between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea regions,'' Armenian Ambassador said.
