The President of the Republic met with the President of the European Parliament

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the President of the European Parliament Josep Borell Fontelles.
The President of the European Parliament expressed satisfaction over the ratification of the EU Constitutional Treaty by the Estonian Riigikogu, and commended Estonia for its rapid economic growth. President Rüütel outlined developments in Estonia following its accession to the European Union and assured that he attaches great importance to the further political development of the European Union.
Also the process of democratisation in the EU neighbouring countries was discussed at greater length. The Head of Estonian State underlined that it is important to assist the countries that have chosen the European integration path in bringing their legal space in line with European values.
Josep Borell Fontelles concluded that the integration of new members would strengthen European political identity and invited President Rüütel to speak about Estonia’s EU experiences in the European Parliament.
