The President of the Republic and his Hungarian colleague visited Tartu

President Arnold Rüütel and the President of the Republic of Hungary László Sólyom visited Tartu and met with Mayor of Tartu Laine Jänes.President Arnold Rüütel and the President of the Republic of Hungary László Sólyom, who is on a state visit in Estonia, today visited Tartu and met with Mayor of Tartu Laine Jänes and Rector of Tartu University Jaak Aaviksoo.

In Tartu Town Hall, the Head of Hungarian State signed the visitors’ book and delivered a complimentary speech in which, among other issues, he wished Tartu success in running for the status of the European Capital of Culture.

In the main building of Tartu University, the presidents met with Rector Jaak Aaviksoo and vice rectors Birute Klaas and Ain Heinaru. Thereafter, they visited the Department of Estonian and Fenno-Ugric Linguistics, where a soon to be completed big Hungarian-Estonian Dictionary was introduced to the Head of Hungarian State and in which the guest showed a great interest. President Sólyom met also with Hungarian students studying in Tartu University and with Hungarians living in Estonia who are members of the Munkacsi Society.

Mayor of Tartu Laine Jänes hosted a lunch to the visiting heads of state in Tartu City Museum, where the guests also acquainted themselves with the venerable history of the university town. President Sólyom said that he felt himself at home in Tartu and would like to return one day.

Tonight, the Estonian and Hungarian presidents will also attend a reception in Tallinn Town Hall hosted by the Ambassador of Hungary to Estonia István Mohácsi. The Head of Hungarian State will leave Estonia today, late in the evening.
