The President of the Republic greeted the President of the Republic of Hungary27.03.2006
The President of the Republic of Hungary László Sólyom today arrived in Estonia for a state visit and was greeted by the President of the Republic of Estonia at Kadriorg.
After the official reception ceremony in front of the Presidential Palace, the presidents had a meeting where presents were exchanged and the Head of Estonian State presented the Collar of the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana to the President of Hungary.
Following that, there was a tête-à-tête meeting of the presidents, and a meeting with the delegations where issues of cooperation within the European Union and the EU neighborhood Policy, possibilities of further development of Estonian-Hungarian cultural and economic cooperation, as well as problems of small Fenno-Ugric peoples were discussed.
President Rüütel assured that Estonia’s and Hungary’s viewpoints and aspirations have always been close, and the current visit demonstrates this clearly. In the words of the Head of Estonian State it is very important to cooperate within the framework of the EU Neighborhood Policy and to facilitate also the development of other Fenno-Ugric peoples. President Rüütel also emphasized the necessity to help Russia with the democratization of its society.
In the words of the President of the Republic of Hungary, his country attaches great importance to the problems of other Fenno-Ugric peoples and finds that help only in the field of culture is not sufficient as those peoples need also integrated infrastructure, their own enterprises, schools and higher education institutions. President Sólyom introduced Hungary’s viewpoints concerning cooperation within European context and confirmed that Hungary is in favor of further development of the EU common foreign policy, and hopes that Estonia will soon ratify the EU Constitutional Treaty.
In the evening, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will host a festive dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Hungary.
Tomorrow, President Sólyom and President Rüütel will visit Tartu where they will meet with Mayor of Tartu Laine Jänes and Rector of Tartu University Jaak Aaviksoo.
The President of the Republic of Hungary will leave Estonia tomorrow evening.
