The President of the Republic attended the opening ceremony of the coastal surveillance system

President Arnold Rüütel acquainted himself with the work of the new Maritime Rescue Control Centre.President Arnold Rüütel today attended the formal opening ceremony of integrated coastal surveillance system that covers the entirety of Estonian territorial waters and coastal areas. The ceremony took place at the Tallinn Maritime Rescue Control Centre.

For the opening ceremony, an Honour Squad of border guards was lined up and was greeted by the Head of State. The list of speakers included: Kalle Laanet, Minister of Internal Affairs; LtCol Roland Peets, Director General of the Board of Border Guard; Julius Bobinger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany; Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, Commander of Estonian Defence Forces, and Herve Guillou, a representative of EADS Deutchland GmbH, the company that had supplied the surveillance system.

President Rüütel acquainted himself with the work of the new Maritime Rescue Control Centre and answered the questions of journalists. The Head of State said that he attaches great importance to the new coastal surveillance system as it allows the border guard to better control and monitor any movement in Estonian territorial waters, in the interests of national defence and for safe navigation of ships. According to the President of the Republic, Estonia can better fulfil its obligations as a frontier country of the European Union and NATO with the help of this system.
