In the words of the Head of Estonian State, Estonia had a strong bond with Canada due to a considerable Estonian community in Canada, the vitality and success of which indicated that there were good preconditions for developing mutual friendship and cooperation between the two countries. ''Estonia is grateful for a warm and understanding reception extended to our compatriots by Canada,'' the President of the Republic said.

President Rüütel added that Canada was one of the first countries to recognise the restoration of independence in Estonia, and had contributed to building up institutions of independent Estonia. ''Among successful examples I would like to single out the language immersion projects, establishment of the Estonian Legal Language Centre, and assistance to our Defence Forces that has helped us to become a NATO country contributing to international peacekeeping,'' the Head of Estonian State said.

The Ambassador of Canada confirmed that there was a real friendship between Canada and Estonia and their citizens. According to Ambassador Poulin, Estonian-Canadian joint aid programmes aimed to assist Ukraine, Moldova and the Caucasus countries could successfully facilitate the development in those countries.
