The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria Jakub Forst-Battaglia who introduced the priorities of Austria during its EU presidency. The discussion focused on the EU Constitutional Treaty, the Lisbon Strategy and issues related to energy problems.

The President of the Republic assured that Estonia intends to ratify the EU Constitutional Treaty, and it has already been introduced to the legislative proceedings in the Riigikogu. President Rüütel stressed that the European Union should explore into the problems that caused the rejection of the Constitutional Treaty by voters in France and the Netherlands.

The Head of Estonian State and the Austrian Ambassador shared an opinion that the European Union has to be as independent as possible in the areas which concern energy resources, in order to guarantee wholesome development and security. President Rüütel emphasised the importance of development of alternative energy sources both from the viewpoint of security as well as environment.

Issues related to the EU-Russia relations and Estonian-Russian border agreement were also touched upon. The Head of Estonian State and the Austrian Ambassador stressed that the European Union has to have a unified Russian policy. Ambassador Jakub Forst-Battaglia confirmed that Austria supports Estonian efforts concerning the Estonian-Russian border issues. Possibility of introducing a visa-free regime with Russia was also discussed. President Rüütel stressed that Estonia does not consider visa freedom with Russia possible at the present moment.
