PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to hand over the Young Scientist Prize18.11.2005
President Rüütel will hand over the Cultural Foundation's Young Scientist Prize of the Year 2005 on November 21, at 14:00 p.m. at Kadriorg. This year there were 12 nominees.
The Young Scientist of the Year Prize was awarded to Sulev Kõks, senior researcher of the Department of Physiology of the University of Tartu who is working in the field of molecular biomedicine. He has been one of the creators of the PhD programme in neuroscience, which was initiated by the Faculty of Medicine, being a pathfinder for establishing PhD schools in Estonia. Sulev Kõks is also a recognised expert in the field of biological psychiatry and neurochemistry. He has received several science prizes and awards and his works have been published in 35 prereviewed scientific journals.
Sulev Kõks has gathered together a strong scientific research group and is the supervisor of seven PhD and five Master's degree students. One of the main goals of his work group is to find new medical preparations realising the achievements of fundamental sciences and to apply them both in practical medicine as well as in pharmaceutical industry.
The Young Scientist Prize in the amount of 50 000 kroons is awarded by the President of the Republic's Cultural Foundation and is funded by entrepreneur Toomas Luman.
