The President of the Republic honoured Education Prize laureates

President Arnold Rüütel honoured Education Prize laureates. From left Evald Laprik, Inge Unt, president Arnold Rüütel and Lauri Leesi.President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg handed over Education Prize Awards of the President of the Republic's Cultural Foundation.

The Education Prize 2005 to the amount of 50,000 kroons went to Lauri Leesi, Director of Tallinn French Lyceum; to the amount of 30,000 kroons to Professor Emeritus Inge Unt, an active member of the Council of the Institute of Educational Research, and the Head of Didactics Section; to the amount of 20,000 kroons to Evald Laprik, a highly recognised educational leader, a founding member of the Estonian School Leaders Association. This year three laureates were selected from among 19 nominees.

In the words of the President of the Republic, after Estonia's integration with the European Union and NATO it has been asked what goals Estonia has to set for its future and how to catch up with other developed societies. President Rüütel concluded that one of the goals could be development of education in Estonia, and said that he was very pleased to honour those who had already accomplished a lot in that field.

Lauri Leesi thanked for the high recognition on behalf of all the laureates and expressed his satisfaction that this year rewards were given to pedagogues who are interested in eternal conspets and work for the sake of preservation of values of Estonian education.

The Education Prize was established in 2003 and is awarded to educators at all levels of education who have distinguished themselves by professional excellence in Estonian educational life as teachers, university teachers, leaders or employees of educational establishments, authors of textbooks or methodological materials, as well as initiators and implementers of practical educational innovations, or as education officials who have developed education policy. In the earlier years the Education Prizes has been were awarded to Tarmo Kerstna, Kersti Nigesen, Martin Ehala, Jüri Vene, Tiia-Ester Loitme, Irene Käosaar and Peeter Mehisto. The Education Prize is funded by Hansapank.
