President Arnold Rüütel had a meeting with kindergarten teachers and pre-school education specialists advanced in yearsToday President Arnold Rüütel had a meeting in Kadriorg with kindergarten teachers and pre-school education specialists advanced in years. The President of the Republic of Estonia thanked those present for their long-term dedicated activities. The meeting focused on the history of pre-school educational establishments and current issues.

The topics discussed included the extracurricular education and healthcare of children as well as vocational education and its development possibilities. A common opinion was expressed that kindergarten teachers' work should be more valued. "There exist fields support given to which may be delayed, but children cannot wait," said the President of the Republic of Estonia.

In May this year 100 years passed since the first Estonian kindergarten was opened in Estonia. The foundation of the Tartu Estonian Kindergarten Society in 1905, initiated by Jaan Tõnisson, was of utmost importance in the development of the Estonian- language and pro-Estonian education. This year we can also celebrate the 165th anniversary of the first known day nursery for small children in Estonia - a private kindergarten opened in 1840 in Tallinn by Elisabeth von Üxküll.
