PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to go to Riga for the summit of presidents

President Arnold Rüütel will leave on Friday, May 6, for a working visit to the Republic of Latvia to participate in the meeting of the three Baltic presidents with the President of the United States George W. Bush. The meeting will take place on Saturday, May 7.

During the U.S.-Baltic summit, the aspects of cooperation between those countries will be addressed, also the progress made in the Baltic states during the last 15 years. Proceeding from there, reinforcement of democracy both in the neighbourhood of our countries, as well as in the whole world will be discussed, also touching upon reform processes in Near East and the missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Today, before departing for the summit, President Rüütel said that Estonia and the other Baltic states could give a valuable contribution to the development of transatlantic cooperation. "Promotion of balanced development is a task, which the states have to do on different levels. For Estonia, it is essential to focus more on appreciating people. This is very much in line with many of our aspirations in our foreign policy activities. Sharing common values with our partners both in the European Union as well as in NATO, we wish to take part in the processes that help more and more people to find within democratic order of society new possibilities for self realisation and decent life. We wish to facilitate in Russia and in the countries covered by the EU Neighbourhood Policy democratisation process of their societies and promotion of reform processes," the head of Estonian state said.

The meeting of the President of the Republic of Estonia Arnold Rüütel, the President of the Republic of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga and the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus with the President of the United States of America George W. Bush will take place on Saturday, May 7 in Riga. The four heads of state will also give a joint press conference.

The presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will have also a meeting between themselves and after that they will attend the presentation of a longer speech made by President Bush. Following that, President Rüütel will meet with Estonian journalists at the press centre of the summit.

During the visit, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and the Estonian Ambassador to Latvia Toomas Lukk will accompany the Head of State.

The President of the Republic will arrive in Estonia from his working visit on Saturday night, May 7.
