18.02.2005

The President of the Republic will hand over the President's Folklore Prize for the year 2004 on Saturday, February 19, at noon at the Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu.

On the proposal of the Estonian Literary Museum, the prize will be given to Helgi Suluste and Merlin Kõiv. Helgi Suluste is a pensioner, who in recent years has contributed to the Estonian Folklore Archives, participating in recording of events and anniversaries of the ''Eluring'' (Life Circle). She has taken close to her heart to document also the traditions and cultural history of her home place, and has compiled a manuscript ''Ranna-Kodavere ümbruse looduslike annetega pillimehi 20. sajandil'' (20th Century Naturally Gifted Musicians from Ranna-Kodavere). The manuscript contains stories about local traditions of making music and parties, examples of repertoire of local musicians and their life stories.

Merlin Lõiv is a student of the University of Tartu, who got the prize for collecting and recording the traditions of the Estonian Defence Forces. The voluminous collection, comprising of a 200-pages manuscript and four hours of sound recordings, provides a good overview of phraseology, jokes and songs of the servicemen of the Estonian Defence Forces. The material not only introduces soldiers' folklore, but also helps us to have a look at soldiers' everyday life, their attitudes and mentality.

This year the folklore prize, donated by the President's Cultural Foundation, amounts 12000 kroons, which will be divided between the two laureates.
