President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the credentials of the Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland, Noel Kilkenny.
According to the President of the Republic, Ireland had supported and helped us a lot in acceding to the European Union, which applied to both our pre-accession preparations and the act of accession itself culminating on 1 May 2004 in Dublin. ''Our hitherto experience of interstate cooperation provides a firm ground for protecting the interests of our nations in a renewed European Union as well,'' told President Rüütel.
The Estonian Head of State observed that in Estonia recent years had witnessed an increasing interest in Ireland and Irish economic model. ''Estonian business circles acknowledge Ireland's economic success and wish our exchange of experience to continue. It is important to promote our existing contacts and to pursue our common goals,'' said the President of the Republic.
Ambassador Kilkenny noted that multifaceted relations between Ireland and Estonia had expanded and deepened in recent years. ''Our two countries cooperated closely in the accession negotiations, in the Convention on the Future of Europe and in the subsequent Intergovernmental Conference, and we continue to share common interests and positions on many of the issues facing the European Union,'' said the Irish Ambassador.
