The President of the Republic opened Maamess 2004

President Arnold Rüütel today at the Fairs Centre of AS Tartu Näitused (Tartu Fairs) opened the agricultural fair Maamess 2004.

The President of the Republic opening the fair emphasized that it was important that there were wholesome Estonian food on the table of Estonian people. According to President Rüütel, there was more and more talk about agriculture and rural life having also non-commercial aspects, such as maintaining cross-generational continuity, the Estonians' traditional way of life and scenic beauty.

"In just a couple of weeks' time, Estonia will be a Member of the European Union. Then, the competitive conditions and market opportunities of our products are going to improve. Should we be able to use EU subsidies wisely, the development of rural life and farming would gain new momentum," the President of the Republic said.

After the opening ceremony, President Rüütel at the fairs centre planted a river birch.

This fair belongs to the EURASCO and has been entered in the calendar of the most important agricultural fairs taking place in Europe. Nearly 200 companies from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Belarus, Denmark and Great Britain take part in the fair.
