The President of the Republic to go to a forum on information society

President Arnold Rüütel on 9 December together with a delegation accompanying him will leave for Geneva to attend the World Summit on the Information Society organized by the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union. The Estonian Head of State in Geneva will meet with the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Yoshio Utsumi.

On Wednesday, the President of the Republic will attend an official lunch for heads of state and government hosted by Kofi Annan as well as the opening ceremony and plenary session of the forum. In the afternoon, President Rüütel will meet with the President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, and the President of Croatia, Stjepan Mesić. In the evening of December 10, the Representation of Estonia in Geneva will hold a reception in honour of the President of the Republic and the Estonian delegation where President Rüütel will meet with local Estonians as well. The President of the Republic also will attend the forum's dinner for heads of delegations.

On 11 December, President Rüütel at the forum will deliver a speech on the development of information society in Estonia, attend a lunch for the heads of state participating in the forum, hosted by the Swiss Confederacy and Canton of Geneva, and take part in the roundtable "Information and Communication Technology as a Tool to Achieve the Millenium Development Goals".

From Estonia, also Member of the Board of the Baltic Computer Systems Ants Sild and Director of the E-Governance Academy Foundation Ivar Tallo as well as Adviser Andrus Aaslaid and Adviser Mait Heidelberg representing the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications will take part in the forum.

President Rüütel and the delegation accompanying him are scheduled to return to Tallinn on Saturday before noon.
