The President of the Republic presented the Navy with a banner
19.11.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today took part in a ceremony at the Naval Base where he, on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Estonian Navy, presented the Division of Minesweepers with a banner.

The President of the Republic at the banner presentation ceremony expressed delight that the Navy in the twelve years since the reestablishment of Estonian independence had successfully participated in international exercises, and located and neutralized mines laid in Estonian waters during the last wars. According to President Rüütel, the Estonian Navy through successful participation in BALTRON had proven its capability for multinational cooperation, and our allies had recognized Estonian naval officers for having performed excellently in commanding posts of BALTRON.

The banner of the Division of Minesweepers was donated by the Chief of the Kaitseliit Port Unit, Reserve First Lieutenant Toomas Peek, and consecrated by the Chaplain of the Navy, Lieutenant Roland Tõnisson. The banner has been designed by Priit Herodes, Chairman of the Estonian Heritage Society and Heraldry Committee.

The Navy regards as its birthday the anniversary of the foundation of a naval department in the General Staff of the Defence Forces in 1918.
