The President of the Republic tomorrow will speak in Martti Ahtisaari lecture series
16.11.2003

President Rüütel tomorrow at the University of Jyväskylä will deliver a lecture on the cooperation between the Baltic Sea region and the European Union. The patron of the lectures organised each autumn by the City of Jyväskylä and the University of Jyväskylä is Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland.

Before the lecture, President Rüütel will visit the City Government of Jyväskylä and meet with Mayor Pekka Kettunen. The President of the Republic will familiarize himself with research possibilities in the field of nanosciences at the University of Jyväskylä and open an exhibition by artist Valli Lember-Bogatkina in the main building of the university.

The Martti Ahtisaari lecture series on world politics features top politicians from Finland and other countries. The tradition of the lectures dates back to November 1999, when the Presidents of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland met in Jyväskylä to mark the tenth anniversary of the end of the Cold War. Also Martti Ahtisaari, President of the Republic of Finland in the years 1994-2000, will attend the lecture.

President Rüütel in 2002 received an honorary Doctor degree from the University of Helsinki.
