The President of the Republic handed over the Young Scientist Prize13.11.2003
 President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg presented Ivo Leito with the Young Scientist Prize 2003 awarded by the Cultural Foundation. 19 young scientists had competed for the prize in this year.
Doctor Leito is Associate Professor at the Chemical Physics Institute of the University of Tartu and director of the university's testing plant. His research areas include superacids and superbases as well as chemical metrology.
The President of the Republic expressed satisfaction that the number of young promising scientists and encouraging research directions in Estonia was constantly increasing in a whole range of different scientific disciplines. He voiced hope that with Estonia's accession to the European Union the scientific contacts and activities of our researchers would experience an even more rapid growth.
According to Toomas Luman, backer of the Young Scientist Prize, research in areas like molecular biology, quantum physics and creation of super substances, in which Estonian scientists had distinguished themselves, did credit to any country and demonstrated the potential and competitiveness of our scientists. He added that Ivo Leito personified the rise of a new generation of Estonian scientists not only in the Estonian but also in the global arena of science.
Dr. Leito emphasized that one of the most important things to scientists was the support of home and family. He added that he was an optimist regarding the Estonian scientific potential, and professed that from Estonian scientists quite a lot was to be expected at the world level.
