President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Members of the Riigikogu's Social Affairs Committee to hear the Committee's positions and work directions concerning population policies, but, first of all, concerning the parents' allowances bill the Riigikogu is working on.
The Members of the Riigikogu's Social Affairs Committee participating in the meeting presented the differing views of the Riigikogu's factions on the bill. The President's Counsellor on Science, Jüri Kann, explained the positions of the President's Academic Council on this issue.
President Rüütel expressed his delight that the Riigikogu was paying attention to the family policy and emphasized that it was critical to continue this process in a more profound manner. In the opinion of the President of the Republic, a complex approach was needed in order to improve our demographic situation, while attention should be paid to both measures increasing the birth rate and future care for children. "It is important to ensure that the process launched by this draft law were not interrupted but functioned as a long-term one," President Rüütel said.
The President of the Republic suggested that the mother's role should be valued more than so far. He voiced hope that mothers would be paid more attention to in their workplaces, and society would care more for the health of both children and parents.
