President Arnold Rüütel met with Prime Minister Adrian NastasePresident Arnold Rüütel continuing his state visit to Romania this morning in Bucharest met with Prime Minister Adrian Nastase.

At first, the Estonian Head of State congratulated Romania on its election as Member of the UN Security Council. "The decisions of this body are of paramount importance to the whole world and thus, the membership of the Council is a great expression of appreciation to Romania," President Rüütel said, "and we in Estonia, too, are delighted at a decision like that."

As noted by the President of the Republic, at the meetings having taken place in the two days of his visit, it had been repeatedly stressed that we had failed to make use of possibilities to enliven our bilateral economic relations and, therefore, they were extremely modest. The President of the Republic added that also existence of up-to-date connecting roads and mutual investments would promote interregional contacts on the North-South Axis. He noted that influx of foreign investments into Estonia testified to the trustworthiness of our state.

Prime Minister Adrian Nćstase voiced hope that Estonia supported Romania in its efforts to become a Member of the European Union. President Rüütel contended that Estonia was willing not only to do that but also to share with Romania its experience concerning the integration process.

In the morning, the President of the Republic together with the President of Romania, Ion Iliescu, attended a Romanian-Estonian Business Forum where both Heads of State spoke about prospects to build a closer relationship between our two countries and business circles. Minister of Agriculture Tiit Tammsaar gave an overview of the development of Estonia’s economy and its adaptation to the EU common agricultural policy over the last decade.
