The President of the Republic met with Siim Kallas
14.10.2003

President Arnold Rüütel at his today's meeting with the Chairman of the Reform Party, Siim Kallas, noted that the authors of the draft National Agreement had endeavoured to identify the national values and aspirations shared by all parties to the agreement. Since they, in the President's estimation, had succeeded in doing this by the present draft, we had every reason to believe that the agreement would soon be signed.

Siim Kallas noted that, although the document contained many good and true principles, the Reform Party in view of pragmatic considerations did not support such an agreement, which imposed obligations mainly on the government. At the same time, their party valued the forum of the parties to the agreement for providing excellent opportunities to discuss strategic development plans. Siim Kallas contended that the Reform Party was ready to take part in the work of the forum.

The Chairman of the Board of the Public Understanding Foundation, Aadu Luukas, said that the parties to the agreement, so to speak, were growing during process, thus becoming ready to make their own contributions rather than making stipulations with regard to other parties only.

The President of the Republic supported the position that the idea of the forum of the parties to the agreement was to start in an atmosphere of high political culture debates on how to better put into practice our national goals.
