Joint Statement by the Presidents of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania Riga, 6th October 2003
06.10.2003

We, the Presidents of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, welcome the spirit of public and private partnership of the Baltic Development Forum in shaping the Baltic Sea region as a dynamic economic frontrunner in Europe.

The membership of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the EU will grant a free movement of labour force, flow of capital, goods and services within the Baltic States and will contribute to the economic growth in the Baltic Sea region.

The realisation of modern Trans-European Networks (TEN) infrastructure projects of the Baltic Sea Region will allow us to make a substantial contribution to the development of a modern and competitive transportation system, integrated with that of the European Union as well as to join Baltic Sea region electricity grids with the common European electricity market.

We invite the governments and business community of the region and the European Union to allocate financial support and investments in order to facilitate TEN energy and transportation projects in the Baltic Sea region for further successful integration of our region into the common European economy.

We, as the Presidents of the countries at the Baltic Sea, in the context of transport and energy, stress the necessity to pay also a special attention to the maritime safety and environmental protection to minimise the potential risks of contamination by oil, chemicals and dangerous substances in the Baltic Sea area.
