The President of the Republic met the Prime Minister of Malta

President Arnold Rüütel met with Maltese Prime Minister Edward Fenech AdamiPresident Arnold Rüütel this morning on a state visit to the Republic of Malta met with Maltese Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami. Their conversation focused on possibilities to develop bilateral relations between Estonia and Malta.

Both sides agreed that the existence of diverse contacts in the field of culture and economy was only natural and the contacts could easily be extended. The interlocutors dealt more thoroughly with the promotion of tourism and possible cooperation between our two maritime nations in the sphere of shipping, marine research and port services. Prime Minister Adami expressed great interest in Estonia's progress in the field of information technology.

The President of the Republic suggested that contacts at different levels, from state leaders and top politicians to officials and common citizens, were a crucial precondition for the success of comprehensive communication between our countries. Both sides confirmed their willingness to cooperate also at the Intergovernmental Conference of the European Union.

In the morning, the President of the Republic had a meeting with Alfred Santi, the opposition leader in the Parliament of Malta, which addressed also the cooperation between our two countries. It was agreed at their meeting, among other things, on the necessity to work out common positions of small countries on the EU Constitutional Treaty and the future of the Community.

Before noon, the President of the Republic along with the official, business and press delegations accompanying him called at the Malta Freeport where the Minister of Transport and Communications of Malta, Gensu Galea, and port leaders gave the guests an overview of the port's operations.

Thereafter, they visited a Bronze Age underground temple in Paola. The Maltese temples are the oldest known buildings in the world.

In the afternoon, the President of the Republic will open a business seminar at the Chamber of Commerce of Malta, in which both the accompanying and local businessmen and economists are going to take part.
