The President of the Republic met with the Estonian community of the United States

President Rüütel speaking at the Estonian HousePresident Rüütel today at the Estonian House of New York met with the local Estonian community. The President of the Republic spoke about Estonia's development after the restoration of its independence, the reasons why Estonia had decided to join the European Union, and the process of drawing up our National Agreement.

According to the President of the Republic, we had to admit that even today, twelve years after regaining independence, the Estonian state was in several respects suffering from the wounds of the past. President Rüütel expressed his concern about several tendencies in Estonia’s social development characteristic of a pre-crisis situation, which had accompanied our rapid development.

At the same time, the President of the Republic expressed confidence that the development of Estonian society would be accelerated if we valued consideration and tolerance more than so far.

After his speech, President Rüütel had a conversation with local Estonians in a more casual atmosphere. Estonian citizens residing in the United States shared with the President their concerns, inter alia, about possibilities to participate in elections and to get a new passport.
