The President of the Republic met the Chairman of the Riigikogu's Constitutional Committee

The President of the Republic today met with Urmas Reinsalu, the Chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the Riigikogu.
The Chairman of the Constitutional Committee informed the Head of State about the progress with the parliamentary procedures to amend the Constitution. The President of the Republic expressed support for the idea to elect President in future in direct election. Other proposals to amend the Constitution were under discussion too.
President Rüütel and the Chairman expressed desire to continue their cooperation as well as exchange of information and views. Urmas Reinsalu suggested that a representative of the President of the Republic should attend the Committees discussions about issues concerning amendments to the Constitution.
They also discussed issues connected with the EU Constitutional Convention noting that signs of federalism needed to be opposed.
