The President of the Republic met the Governing Mayor of Berlin
05.09.2003

President Arnold Rüütel at noon today at Kadriorg met with Klaus Wowereit, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, capital of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Estonian Head of State said that during his recent stay in Berlin he had experienced again Germany's continuous support to Estonia's aspirations, which formed a good foundation for the cooperation between the two countries also in the future European Union.

The Governing Mayor of Berlin at today's meeting assured that Germany was delighted at the forthcoming enlargement of the European Union. In addition, Klaus Wowereit expressed his belief that the results of the Estonian referendum would be positive. "This decision is important to both your people and the whole of Europe," he said. According to Mayor Wowereit, Berlin had received significant support from the EU and Estonia was going to have similar chances.

Their conversation also addressed the future functioning of the EU, in the first place, the need for a common foreign policy. As stressed by President Rüütel, Estonia was in favour of conducting a common foreign policy based on shared value judgements, which would find approval in the United Nations Organisation and across the world.
