The President of the Republic launched his tour of Viljandimaa

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel on September 2-4 are on a tour of the County of Viljandimaa.

This morning, the Acting County Governor of Viljandimaa, Kalle Küttis, briefed the President of the Republic on the county. According to the Governor, the main problems in Viljandimaa were shrinking population and rising unemployment, the county’s location far from main roads and the lack of a customs office on the border with Latvia. Subsequently, Mayor of Võhma Ants Pärn spoke about the present day and future plans of this erstwhile monofunctional settlement.

The President in the forenoon familiarized himself also with Olustvere School of Services and Rural Economy where Director Arnold Pastak gave him an overview of the schools and manor house’s present state and the respective development plans. President Rüütel voiced hope that the school succeeded in preserving the estate complex as a whole.

After having visited the school, the President and Mrs Rüütel met with the people of Suure-Jaani. The Head of State explained why he favoured Estonia’s accession to the European Union and what kind of developments both “No” and "Yes" vote would likely entail. The President in reply to asked questions noted that although he himself was for the decision to accede as a solution most favourable to Estonia’s development, he respected opposite opinions as well.

In the afternoon, the President will meet the residents of the Village Kuhjavere.
