The President of the Republic received disabled people
28.08.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today on the occasion of the European Year of Disabled People invited to the Rose Garden of the President's Office representatives of Estonian chambers of disabled people. In defiance of the grey weather, a few hundred people came to the reception.

The President of the Republic in his welcoming remarks emphasized that one of the endeavours of a state valuing welfare of its citizens was alleviation of social inequality and, therefore, society had to see to it that its members were not confronted with social isolation.

President Rüütel said he was sure that we could look into future hopefully and the Estonian society was more and more characterized not only by wealth and progressivism but also by tolerance and empathy. The Head of State called on all to strive for a situation where each individual in Estonia felt himself as member of a family sticking together.

Also Minister of Social Affairs Marko Pomerants greeted those having arrived at the reception saying that seeking for solutions to the problems of disabled people was neither political nor party political matter, hence we should not get bogged down in the extant system but attempt to find new solutions.

The Women's Ensemble of Estonian Federation of the Blind performed music at the reception.
