President Arnold Rüütel today after having visiting enterprises in Valgamaa completed his three-day tour of South East Estonia.
In the morning, the President with the County Governor of Valgamaa, Georg Trashanov, and leaders of local governments discussed possibilities to balance regional development. Under discussion were, in the first place, business in border regions located far from hubs of conurbation and the need for vocational education reform. They expanded on possibilities to promote tourism in the County of Valgamaa where, after Estonia's accession to the European Union, an increase in the number of Latvian tourists is to be expected.
From Valgamaa's enterprises, the President of the Republic first visited the meat processing plant Oskar at Otepää where he talked with its workers about the influence of the EU accession on Estonia's development. President Rüütel professed once again that he did not see any alternatives to the accession. The Head of State today in Valgamaa visited also the firms Sangaste Linnas, Silva-Agro, Linnu Talu, Lota Mõis and Valervika.
The day ended again with a seminar for local entrepreneurs. County Governor Georg Trashanov underscored the need to advance towards innovative production and to use for this purpose the scientific potential of such nearby scientific establishments like the University of Tartu. The President in his concluding remarks said that he was pleased with what he had seen during these three days in South East Estonia: the local business over last years had made significant headway and the managers and owners of local firms had worked hard in the name of future.
