President Arnold Rüütel today visiting small and medium-sized enterprises in Võrumaa started his three-day tour of South East Estonia.
In the morning, the County Governor of Võrumaa, Mait Klaassen, the Mayor of Võru, Ando Hagel, and the Chairman of the Local Government Association of Võrumaa, Ülo Tuulik, briefed the visiting Head of State on the situation of local entrepreneurship and the enterprises to be visited today.
At the Timo Keraamika Ltd, the President expressed his interest in the chances of a small enterprise to scale up its business. Tiit Raag, owner of the enterprise, said that the greatest obstacle was infrastructure expansion was held back by poor state of roads, inadequate water and electricity supply, and insufficient possibilities to find new workers. Since the accession fee implemented by Eesti Energia put a great strain on the resources of many small businesses, Jüri Järviste, the Chairman of EVEA, suggested that states control of enterprises having monopoly be enhanced by an amendment to the relevant law.
Representatives of AS Abris Jalatsid explained to the President the process of manufacturing work and child footwear at their firm. As their problem, they broached a lack of larger orders, adding that things could be put right by state procurements. President Rüütel agreed with the opinion of the leader of the company that the Estonian Defence Forces, Police and other state agencies should place orders primarily with Estonian manufacturers.
Thereafter, the President called at the Farm of Haanjamehe, a tourism centre just finished, visited the Ski Centre of Haanja, and examined the restoration works at the Tower of Munamäe.
President Rüütel during the tour scheduled to end on Wednesday wants to increase his knowledge of operations and problems of small and medium-sized enterprises in South East Estonia.
