18.08.2003

The President of the Republic started his visit to the County of LäänemaaOn Monday and Tuesday, President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel are on a tour of Läänemaa visiting enterprises and educational and cultural establishments of the county, and talking with local people.

This morning, Jaanus Sahk, the County Governor of Läänemaa, and Ülo Kalm, the Mayor of the Rural Municipality of Noarootsi, greeted the Head of State at his Paslepa summer residence and gave him a short overview of the county and the rural municipality. County Governor Sahk spoke of Läänemaa’s unique nature enabling the county to promote ecotourism. According to the County Governor, he was delighted that the unemployment rate, high so far, was on the decline now and the local woodworking industries were gaining a foothold. Jaanus Sahk said that big industry had never been characteristic of Läänemaa, since small enterprises were more common for the county.

The Mayor of Noarootsi highlighted as a singularity of the rural municipality that it had no loans and, at the same time, was very sparsely populated. Ülo Kalm also emphasized that the land reform had already been completed in the rural municipality. According to the Mayor, the Upper Secondary School of Noarootsi was internationally renowned, had a good image in the Nordic Countries, and could boast an average of five applicants competing for a place at the school. The President of the Republic asked where did the graduates of the Upper Secondary School of Noarootsi find employment. According to Ülo Kalm, quite a few of them were working at local enterprises set up by foreign capital, but also abroad and in business where a good knowledge of foreign languages was a must.

From Paslepa, they travelled to the Estate of Saare where the owner of the estate, Gustav von Rosen, welcomed the President of the Republic and gave him an overview of restoring estate buildings. President Rüütel also visited the Museum of Lyckholm located in an old stable of the estate. The Manor of Saare accommodates the Administration of the Nature Reserve of Silma, the Director of which, Tiit Randla, briefed the President of the Republic on the activities of the reserve and the local natural communities.

Next, Mrs Rüütel left for the Museum of Ants Laikmaa to see the museum’s standing exhibition, and President Rüütel called at Linnamäe Peekon PLC, an enterprise based on local capital, which was the first in Estonia to buy a Danish pig factory and to produce the so-called “stress-free pork”.

Thereafter, the President and Mrs Rüütel headed for the schoolhouse of Nõva to meet with residents of Nõva and Peraküla.
