The President of the Republic continued his tour of Läänemaa in the Rural Municipality of Nõva
18.08.2003

The President of the Republic started his visit to the County of LäänemaaPresident Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today in the schoolhouse of Nõva met with local pupils and residents.

The focus of their conversation was on the infrastructure of Nõva: the local residents voiced their discontentment with the poor state of roads and bus connections in the municipality: namely, gravel roads prevailed in the municipality and the budget of Nõva didn’t allow to improve the roads in the nearest future. The President of the Republic opined that the rural people deserved better infrastructure, and expressed hope that, after Estonia’s accession to the European Union, the roads would be repaired, for the EU attached importance to equal development of its regions and to supporting habitation in the countryside.

The President and Mrs Rüütel also called at the Basic School of Nõva, the house of which – as the second schoolhouse in the County of Läänemaa – has been properly renovated in the period of Estonia’s regained independence. According to the County Governor, Nõva had no problems securing that all children of compulsory school age went to school. President Rüütel found that it was only natural, children having such a beautiful school offering a broad range of activities. Jaanus Sahk stressed that Läänemaa had paid attention to the development of its school network, since investing into education was always justified.

The President of the Republic noted that, as nature was very beautiful at Nõva, Nõva would definitely become a favourite summering place of city dwellers, but also a place for their permanent living. The Mayor of Nõva confirmed that lots of land had been bought already and active construction work was underway in the municipality, adding however, that it had certain drawbacks as well: namely, the holiday makers used the infrastructure of the municipality but didn’t pay the municipality income tax.

Thereafter, they headed for Paraküla where local people told them about their doings: they organize village hops and Midsummer festivities, preserve old cobbled roads and try to keep traditions while building new houses.

In the afternoon, the Head of State visited the RMK Recreation Complex, familiarized himself with the future plans of Roosta Camping and the Port of Dirham, and called at AS Filee Lihatööstus, a meat processing plant at Taebla. Mrs Ingrid Rüütel visited the Day Nursery and the Handicraft Society of Haapsalu.

In the evening, they arrived in Haapsalu where Evald Okas, a meritorious painter, welcomed them at his museum.

The President and Mrs Rüütel also visited the Centre for Neurological Rehabilitation of Haapsalu that was introduced to them by its Head Physician Zemfira Tammik.

At 19:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Haapsalu, the President of the Republic will give a speech at a combined concert-divine service dedicated to the Day of Restoration of Independence, the Town Orchestra of Haapsalu and Lingua Animata, an Estonian-German Ensemble, performing.
