The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister
23.07.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today during his customary working lunch with Prime Minister Juhan Parts discussed with him current domestic and foreign affairs.

The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister talked about Estonian residents’ attitudes to our accession to the European Union and about how to continue the pre-referendum information campaign. It was noted at their meeting that the information work should be extended to cover also those target groups, which had not been reached as yet.

Prime Minister Juhan Parts emphasized that there were many false opinions and a lot of misleading information circulating about the European Union. President Rüütel agreed with that, and they noted jointly that our creative intelligentsia should more actively express their views on the European Union not only in cities and bigger towns but also in the rest of Estonia. They came to the conclusion that we should not only inform our people of the issues concerning the European Union but also achieve that they went to the polls and said “yes”.

In addition, they discussed more thoroughly the issue of traffic safety in Estonia. The Prime Minister informed the President of the Republic of a relevant report of the Minister of Internal Affairs and a new initiative of the Government to improve traffic safety. They underscored that our new Traffic Safety Programme adopted by the Riigikogu already in June needed to be worked on.
