The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of Sri Lanka
03.07.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Sri Lanka, Vethody Kumaran Valsan.

President Rüütel said addressing the Ambassador that so far relations between Estonia and Sri Lanka had developed in a friendly way, both sides respecting each other's interests, and assured that, in order to increase mutual knowledge and to deepen our contacts, Estonia wanted to build a closer relationship between the two countries.

As an encouraging example of these developments, the President of the Republic highlighted the economic relations between Estonia and Sri Lanka, which – due to an increase in our exports - in the last year had enjoyed a swift growth of nearly 20%, and suggested that trends like this should give pleasure to both countries.

Ambassador Valsan also found that Estonia and Sri Lanka should increasingly promote their relations good already today and, as a positive example, brought out two intergovernmental agreements being prepared at present. At the same time, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka opined that agreements only were not enough, and expressed his delight that Sri Lanka already had appointed an honorary consul to Estonia.
