President Arnold Rüütel today at his customary working lunch with Prime Minister Juhan Parts discussed with him topical issues of our domestic and foreign policy.
Their discussion focused on changes in Estonian residents' attitudes to our accession to the European Union and on how to continue the pre-referendum information campaign. According to an opinion poll carried out on June 11-18, support for both the accession to the European Union and the Government had dropped. At the same time, the Presidents positions on the European Union were rated most reliable among both supporters and opponents.
Prime Minister Juhan Parts gave a detailed overview of the Government's austerity plan that had been discussed by the Cabinet the day before. The Prime Minister emphasized that it all was not about a campaign, austerity for austerity's sake, but about a necessity to change ways of thinking. President Rüütel agreed that, in this process, the deciding factors were Estonia's priorities and preferences in the European Union but, first of all, we had to reach accord on them.
In addition, the President of the Republic spoke about his recent visits to and meetings in France and Germany. The Prime Minister informed the President of the Republic of his intention to meet with Finlands new Prime Minister in the next days.
