The President of the Republic met with a Japanese delegation02.07.2003
President Arnold Rüütel today met with the Japanese Economy and Industry Study Mission visiting Estonia. The 27-member delegation of businessmen is also going to visit Sweden, Iceland, Norway and Denmark, and the purpose of their visit is to collect information about the development of information technology and the conservation situation in the Nordic countries.
The President of the Republic described to the delegation Estonia's rapid economic growth, liberal economy and favourable investment possibilities, finding that economic relations between Japan and Estonia were not bad but could be significantly better.
The parties to the meeting expanded on tourism. The members of the Japanese delegation suggested that Estonia could be quite an attraction for Japanese tourists and recommended Estonia to conclude with other Baltic States an agreement on joint tourism promotion abroad. The President of the Republic promised to discuss this issue with the other Baltic Heads of State.
The Head of the Japanese business delegation, Yasuhisa Mitsui, said that, despite the long geographical distance between Estonia and Japan, our languages and cultures had similar features. He spoke highly of the Old City of Tallinn highlighting this as an example of the fact that we knew how to value our culture and heritage.
In the morning, the Japanese business delegation had already met the Estonian Minister of Environment, Villu Reiljan, and the Minister of Economy and Communication, Meelis Atonen.
