The President of the Republic to attend a security studies conference in Germany
16.06.2003

President Arnold Rüütel is on a working visit to Germany. Today, he delivered a talk on regional stability in Europe and its periphery at the 6th Annual Conference of the Partnership for Peace Consortium of Defence Academies and Security Studies Institutes.

The President of the Republic in his speech underlined that Estonia, being a small country, was all too aware of the need for collective and cooperative security, and building on that, did not contrast different relationships or different partners with each other. President Rüütel dealt with various aspects of security in the Baltic Sea region, Europe, and the rest of the world.

According to the Estonian Head of State, security and stability were not simply God’s gift, but rather qualities that required constant nurturing in order not to be lost as a result of imprudence and inaction. This idea was echoed in other speakers’ contributions as well.

Answering questions, President Rüütel stressed that, as to the prospect of democratisation of society and the scope of security expanding, he was very optimistic, for the new neighbours of the European Union were integrated in these processes as well.

The PfP Consortium is an international organisation aimed at promoting military and security education through international cooperation. The consortium currently comprises more than 300 organisations from 42 countries.

This afternoon, the Estonian Head of State will meet with Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor of Berlin, and Norbert Schindler, Member of the Bundestag and Vice-President of the German Union of Farmers. This evening at our embassy, the Ambassador of Estonia to Germany will host a reception in honour of the President of the Republic.
