The award this year went to Jan Kaus, a writer, translator and art critic belonging to the younger generation.

The President of the Republic handing over the prize highlighted Jan Kaus' wide-ranging and versatile activities in the field of literature and culture.

Receiving the prize, Jan Kaus stressed that he did not think he was exceptional among Estonian cultural figures, and that, in the sphere of Estonian literature, there were lots of other young authors deserving this prize.

Jan Kaus has published books of both prose and poetry, and also translations from English and Finnish. In the near future, his collection of stories and essays will be published, and he is about to start translating into Estonian "The History of Cinematographic Art" by Peter von Bagh. In addition, the prizewinner has actively propagated Estonian literature abroad.

The Young Artist Prize is awarded to Estonian artists up to the age of 35 years, whose artistic achievements have been widely recognized, or whose artistic work and activities have considerably helped to make Estonia and its culture known in the world. According to Toomas Luman, Board Member of the Foundation, the President's Cultural Foundation was trying to appreciate the work of people engaged in those spheres, which society, often enough, did not recognize sufficiently.
