The state visit of the President of the Republic to Luxembourg has begun

A festive welcoming ceremony at Marché-aux-HerbesThe state visit of President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg began with a festive welcoming ceremony at Marché-aux-Herbes. The Estonian Head of State and the delegations accompanying him were welcomed by His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri and H.R.H. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

President Rüütel laid a wreath at the Monument of Unity of Luxembourg on Plateau du St-Esprit. The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister, Mr Jean-Claude Juncker, the Minister of Defence, Mr Charles Goerens, and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Lieutenant Colonel Fernand Guth. The Prime Minister of Luxembourg introduced to President Rüütel representatives of patriotic organisations.

From the monument, President Rüütel headed for the City Government of Luxembourg where he is going to meet with Mayor Paul Helminger. The President of the Republic will give the Mayor of Luxembourg as present a reprint of W. Stavenhagen's engraving "Vaade Tallinna all-linnale Toompealt" (View from Toompea over Tallinn's Downtown).

In the afternoon, the Head of State will meet with Jean Spautz, President of the House of Representatives of Luxembourg, Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and Minister of Foreign Affairs Lydie Polfer.

At the end of the visit’s first day, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess at the Grand Ducal Palace will host a dinner in honour of the Estonian President and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel where both Heads of State will deliver speeches.
