The President of the Republic met the Minister of Education and Science

President Arnold Rüütel during the day at Kadriorg met three Members of the Government of the Republic to be provided with overviews of the subjects and problems the new ministers intend to address first of all. In the afternoon, the Head of State had a conversation with the Minister of Education and Science, Toivo Maimets.

In the Minister's opinion, our society had no alternative to the knowledge-based development and, due to that, education had to be one of the priorities in the Government’s programme of action. Considering the importance and the thus-far financing of the area, the Education Minister deemed it crucial that, in accordance with the strategic development plan, the allotments out of state budget for funding education and research be annually increased by at least 0,2% of our GDP over the next years.

President Rüütel supported the standpoint of Minister Maimets and agreed also to the opinion that a relevant decision should become a constituent part of our national agreement. The Head of State emphasized that the functional productivity of both individuals and the state was based on education.

During the meeting, updating of vocational training and setting up school-homes in different regions of Estonia was under discussion as well.
