The President of the Republic met with the President of Lithuania
23.04.2003

The President of the Republic met with the President of LithuaniaPresident Arnold Rüütel this morning at Kadriorg welcomed the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Rolandas Paksas, on his first working visit to Estonia.

At their meeting, the Presidents talked not only about the Estonian-Lithuanian cooperation but also about shared interests and joint action of the Baltic States and the other Baltic Sea states in the future European Union.

The Presidents expressed contentment with the excellent status of bilateral relations between Estonia and Lithuania and with the scope of our cooperation expanding. However, the developments towards the European Union and NATO required new models for action. As noted by the Estonian Head of State, our accumulated experience constituted a good precondition for our joint action also in future alliances, involving in pursuit of similar interests the Nordic Countries as well.

President Paksas noted that a mere political integration into the European Union would be a halfway solution - an economic integration was crucial too. That, however, demanded a modern infrastructure to be in place. President Rüütel agreed to this opinion adding that it was important to find long-term economical solutions for the whole region.

And so, thereafter, the Presidents talked about possible schemes of regional cooperation aimed at the development of infrastructure. In particular, the development of an energy system linked together and a road network covering all Baltic States was under discussion.

President Rüütel and President Paksas will continue their talks this evening and tomorrow morning in Tartu where the Latvian Head of State, Vaire Vike-Freiberga, will join them.
